I have prayed for an opportunity to reach out to Muslim women, and Embassy, an organization which helps equip Christians to contact people in other countries and grow friendships bridging the way to share the gospel, has helped answer that prayer.Sitting at the computer late at night, while my children slept, ready to make my first contact on a language partners website was slightly terrifying. As I scrolled through profiles of women from Muslim majority countries praying for God’s guidance, a note caught my eye, it was basically a suicide note and it scared me into action and
I contacted the writer. She responded that she was fine, but had watched the “13 Reasons” movie and it “affected” her prompting her to write the note. That first contact broke the ice and I also contacted women from Iran, Yemen, and Afghanistan.
One of my fears was how I would be able to form authentic friendships through texting and phone calls alone. Over the summer my friend in Iran and I talked on the phone nearly an hour several days a week, as I helped her practice English for a test. We enjoyed chatting about life and learning about each others’ cultures, and a genuine friendship grew. We have had many conversations about God and our differing beliefs and I have shared numerous scripture passages with her, which she reads to her mother as well.
She has learned to recognize the voices and personalities of all six of my children and delights in hearing their latest antics. My young Afghani friend has recently opened up to me about some difficult situations in her life and her heartbreak about not having a trustworthy friend. I’ve had the privilege to listen, pray for her (using voice messaging) and share scripture with her and, by God’s grace, she now counts me as a true friend.
My friend in Yemen has shared some startling stories about being under demonic attack which has given me the opportunity to pray for her and to share stories from scripture of Jesus’s power over demons. She continues to pray to Allah for healing, and I pray for her deliverance and that she would know it came in Jesus’s name.
It is a faith growing experience to nurture friendships with these dear women and pray for opportunities to clearly share the hope of the gospel with them.
